This Simple Little Medal

It is a simple little medal yet distinguished in its way,

though it still reflects standards of a half forgotten day.

No crosses, stars or symbols of military might,

or laurel wreath of victory are anywhere in sight.

Its color speaks of sacrifice with unrelenting pain,

And of selfless acts of courage no logic can explain.

So this simple little medal is valor's counterpart,

For only blood and suffering can earn the PURPLE HEART.
